I am a texter but I constantly run out of characters because I do tend to write long hand. I think if we are careful to cover the basics of grammar and spelling early and often in schools and home, this may be less of an issue. Insist on standard English and grammar and grade accordingly and students will quickly get the message.
The same thing happens to me as well because I do my best to spell out all my words when I text. Today, even younger students are texting often and are introduced to the endless number of text abbreviations out there. Providing correction at this stage can help imply that this form of grammar is not acceptable in their writing.
